Nairo races to the top

Wonderful  performance by the Colombian cyclist Nairo Quintana this past Saturday 15 of March on the Tirreno Adriatic: a stage divided race, which covers a trip from the coasts of the Tirreno Sea in Italy to the Adriatic coasts on the same country. Better known as the two-sea race, natives, Spanish and Belgic athletes, have always ruled this competition or at least that is what the whole world thought until last year the Colombian cyclist Quintana finished the scurry at second place. The Latin young sportsman started as an amateur in 2009 when he entered the “Club Deportivo Ediciones Mar de Tunja” where he was originally from, and since that he has made his way up to the top, becoming a worldwide-recognized athlete who in the last year won the great title of the “Giro de Italia” turning into the very fist American and Colombian professional to accomplish such award.

He has suffered from several injuries while performing in other tournaments; in fact, one was not long ago and caused a serious wound that required from surgery. Nevertheless, he always comes back up and continues demonstrating what a great competitor he is and how much potential he still has to show.

Something unquestionable after his past performance was his endurance. He finished the stage at “el alto del Terminillo” at 5 hours 26 minutes and 3 seconds, even when the weather conditions were not the best, and left at second place the Dutch Bauke Mollema, along with the Spanish Joaquim Rodriguez. Not only did he give an optimistic prognostic for the Colombian sports in his future victory, but also he rectified his leadership on mountain competitions. We wish him the best in the future phases this Monday 16 and in the final the 17 when a trial ten kilometers race dictates the new champion.

The Great Falcao and his marvelous 23 goals

After difficult times with a complicated health situation, our dear Falcao returned to the fields with our yellow t-shirt; and what a comeback! This Thursday he scored two goals against Baréin, which secured Colombia’s final win with an impressive score of 6-0. But most importantly, these goals have been added up to his long list of wins, making him Colombia’s second best goal scorer of all times. In first place we find Arnoldo Iguarán with twenty four goals to his name (at the category of “Seleccion de mayores”), while Falcao is just one goal away from reaching this timeless record.

Arnoldo scored his first goal in this category on August 22nd of 1979, in a game versus our dear neighbors of Venezuela. If you have not done the math yet, it was 36 years ago! And his last goal, in a game against Chile, was already 24 years ago. As you can see, he has owned the spot of greatest goal scorer for more than two decades. But we all believe that “El Tigre” is going to break the tradition in no time. Falcao’s first goal in this “Seleccion” was in 2007 playing against Montenegro; and since then he has been scoring countless goals in only eight years. Even though some people debate that our dear player has already scored 25 goals in this category, thanks to an arduous investigation done by José Orlando Ascencio, Guillermo Ruíz and Luis Arturo Henao, it is definitely established that one goal by Falcao is still missing in order to achieve the record.

We are sure that Arnoldo’s score is going to be broken soon, and thus demonstrate that Colombia has a great generation of players who are aiming for enormous things. Furthermore, the Manchester United player is only 29 years old, and if he continues doing what he does best we will soon have a legend for the Colombian sports’ history. Besides, not only does he score many goals, but he also does it with great elegance and creativity. We are hoping to see his next achievement, and we are celebrating his win with anticipation.
