DIY VALENTINES DAY!

Laura Salazar 10B

Valentine’s Day has been a tradition since the early years. The myth says it started when Saint Valentine of Rome, helped soldiers who weren’t allowed to marry, to do so; he also helped the ones who were persecuted by the Roman Empire. When he was caught he was put in jail. During his time in jail, he met the jail man’s daughter, and they fell deeply in love, a unique and pure kind of love. Before Saint Valentine’s execution, on February 14th, he wrote her a letter signed with: “Your Valentine”. Why do we use the so famous question “Be my valentine”? Well, because asking it to the one we care about, is inviting that person to have some nice thing as Saint Valentine and the jail man’s daughter had. That’s why every year on February 14th, we celebrate Saint Valentine’s Day and use it as an expression of love and admiration to our partner in crime or this year’s crush.

Everything about DIY'S

Cookie time

What is your favorite cookie? My favorite ones are the macaroon ones and for that reason, I want to share this recipe. The Macaroon cookies were made in Europe, especially in France and, nowadays, they are famous. I like them very much because they’re not only delicious and made up with chocolate but they’re also funny just because they are like little hamburgers with multiple colors. Here is this amazing recipe for doing them.

Ingredients

·       100g / 1 cup of icing  or powdered sugar

·       100g / 1 cup ground almonds

·       2 medium, free-range egg whites

·       Small pinch salt

·       55g / ¼ cup caster / fine sugar

For the filling:

·       150g / 1 ½ cups unsalted butter, softened

·       75 g / 2/3 cup icing / powder sugar

Steps

  • Draw 2.5 cm circles using a cutter or a coin on a piece of baking parchment. They should be well spaced. Turn the parchment over.

  • Blitz the icing sugar and almonds in a food processor, then press through a sieve so the mixture becomes fine and lump free. Mix in the first batch of egg whites to form a thick paste.

  • Dissolve the sugar in water over a medium heat, bring to a boil and cook until the syrup registers 110C.

  • Whisk the egg whites until frothy.

  • When the sugar reaches 118C, slowly drizzle it down the side of the bowl avoiding the turning whisk. Continue to whisk until the mixture has cooled and you have a shiny peaked meringue mixture. Whisk in any colouring.

  • Gently fold and work the meringue into the almond paste - it should now have a dropping consistency similar to cake mixture.

  • Put the mixture into a piping bag fitted with a plain nozzle. Stick the baking paper down with a little mixture so it doesn’t slide around when you pipe. Pipe out small dollops of mixture and press down the peaks with a damp finger.

  • Leave the macaroons for around half an hour to form a skin.

  • Bake the macaroons for the exact time stated in the recipe. This needs to be precise so test one – it should feel firm to the touch and peel easily off the paper. When done, immediately slide the parchment onto the work surface. Cool on the paper.

Remeber you can do this funny, funky treat in any color and flavor you wish. From chocolate (my favorite) to pistachio! The choice is completely yours. I hope you enjoy this recipe and have a great time doing it.
